MY CAREER IN SIX SPOTLIGHT

SERINA HOURICAN

Managing Director; Treasury Sales Executive

Bank of America

Sharing her career journey by answering the six questions below.

Who or what has been your biggest source of inspiration throughout your career?

My parents. They both worked hard for me and my brother to have access to opportunities that they didn’t have as children or young adults. A big part of that was education and that was emphasised from an early stage. Their work ethic was to work hard, be resilient and always push forward despite challenges. The support and encouragement was also given to me from a young age, helping me overcome difficult situations as a female and an ethnic minority. At the same time they taught us kindness, strength, honesty and empathy, which has all helped shaped me today.

Would you say your success is primarily due to luck or hard work?

I believe hard work is the key to success, and being consistent in your efforts over time. I have always valued the opportunity to deep dive into the work I’ve been doing to learn more about the task at hand. I believe this has really helped me get to where I am today. When it comes to luck, sometimes it does help to be in the right place at the right time when opportunities occur.

What is the driving force behind your career aspirations?

This is two fold. I work in global transaction banking, and there is a huge opportunity to continuously learn, grow and make a meaningful impact. I’m motivated by helping others, expanding my knowledge, and working towards the goals of my company and clients. In my line of business, there is a constant evolution of technology and opportunity to contribute to innovative ideas which is exciting. Secondly, having recently become a parent, I want to be a role model to my children and show them how to balances ambition, having a successful career but also be a dedicated parent.

If given the chance to do one thing differently in your career, what would it be and why?

Naturally I am more of an introvert, and I would have invested more time when I was earlier in my career in building and nurturing professional relationships from the start. Networking is not only about advancing your career but also about learning from others, sharing insights and creating opportunities.

What was your most favourite job/role and why?

My current role is challenging but also a lot of fun. I like the fact every day is different, I get to work with a fantastic team, and I learn a new thing every day. I get to interact with many people globally, and enjoy learning about new counties and cultures. I truly believe to excel at anything you do, you have to enjoy it have passion for it, and naturally you will do a better job.

Do you have a favourite motto or quote that guides your professional life?

“Failing to prepare, is preparing to fail.” Always do your prep work before meetings, especially with seniors and clients. It helps you anticipate challenges or questions that may arise and show your knowledge base. It also helps you with outlining and structuring the key points you want to come across in a concise manner. The importance of preparation is the foundation of success.
