MY CAREER IN SIX SPOTLIGHT

Scotiabank Colpatria S.A.
Sharing her career journey by answering the six questions below.
Who or what has been your biggest source of inspiration throughout your career?
I have many sources of inspiration, such as people and life events, that have made an impact on my career. The most inspiring person to my personal development has always been my mother. As a single mother raising two children on her own, she faced numerous challenges. Despite economic hardships, she dedicated herself to her career as a high school Mathematics and Statistics teacher and pursued further education. Determined to expand her knowledge and expertise in Statistics, she earned a Master’s Degree in Applied Statistics in Biology. Her dedication and hard work paid off, earning her widespread recognition as one of the most esteemed high school Statistics teachers of her time. My mother also supported many university students during their studies. She did her best to have a better life for herself and her kids. For that reason, her constant discipline, self-confidence and resilience to face all situations was the best example she imparted to my brother and myself.
Would you say your success is primarily due to luck or hard work?
During my professional life, I have had many ups and downs and have used every situation as a learning opportunity. For that reason, I can attest that hard work is what leads you to be successful. In contrast, luck is related to random situations which do not depend on performance. I prefer to take control of my actions and put forward the hard work to obtain the best results in every situation.
What is the driving force behind your career aspirations?
I have always worked towards being an independent woman to provide the best education and welfare possible for my daughter; to support her in her professional and personal development. My career aspirations are based on growth of experience and attaining higher knowledge, so I am prepared when I face new challenges. This means that I am motivated to have work experiences that give me greater knowledge and specialization in what I do and above all, that make me a better person and professional.
If given the chance to do one thing differently in your career, what would it be and why?
I would dedicate more time to being closer to my colleagues. When you know more about the motivations, aspirations and dreams of your team members and peers, you can support them even more in their development. In a nutshell, I believe that in life, you should help others as you were helped at some point in your career. I truly believe all human beings should consider weaving a great chain of favours to build a better community and world.
What was your most favourite job/role and why?
I have thoroughly enjoyed working in the banking industry and managing products and services. Working in product management gives me the opportunity to interact and collaborate with several areas and departments in the Bank, including Finance, IT, Operations, Marketing, User Design (UX), Legal and many others. It is a big puzzle, and it is really satisfying when I put together all the pieces in their place.
Do you have a favourite motto or quote that guides your professional life?
I like many quotes from the philosopher Marcus Aurelius that I am trying to apply to my current position. The first one is: “Receive without pride, let go without attachment.” This quote encourages me to maintain my emotional balance, without getting carried away by my pride in moments of success or during moments of loss or sadness. It is a way of living with clarity and motivation. The second quote is: “Because a thing seems difficult for you, do not think it impossible for anyone to accomplish.” We all have different skill sets, experiences and strengths. This phrase invites me to recognize and respect the diversity in everyone and to support them.
