MY CAREER IN SIX SPOTLIGHT
Stacey Williams
Head of Global Payments & Trade EMEA
BNY
Sharing her career journey by answering the six questions below.
Who or what has been your biggest source of inspiration throughout your career?
I’ve been most inspired by women leaders who have navigated complex environments with resilience, credibility and authenticity. Seeing women build successful careers while also lifting others up has been incredibly powerful. More broadly, I’m inspired by people who lead with both confidence and empathy, and who create opportunities for the next generation coming through.
Would you say your success is primarily due to luck or hard work?
I believe success comes mainly from hard work, consistency and the willingness to keep learning, although timing and opportunity do play a part.
In financial services, and particularly in payments, you have to be prepared to adapt, stay resilient and continue proving yourself in a fast-moving environment. For me, success has come from putting in the work, building strong relationships and being ready when opportunities arise.
What is the driving force behind your career aspirations?
A key driver for me is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in an industry that is constantly evolving. Payments sits at the centre of innovation, connectivity and client experience, which makes it a particularly exciting space to be in. I’m also motivated by the chance to contribute as a leader, support other women in their careers and help shape a more inclusive and forward-looking industry.
If given the chance to do one thing differently in your career, what would it be and why?
If I could do one thing differently, I would have backed myself earlier and been more confident in taking stretch opportunities before feeling completely ready. I think many women can relate to wanting to be fully prepared before stepping forward, but growth often comes from taking that step before you have every answer. Learning to trust your capability earlier can make a real difference in how quickly you grow.
What was your most favourite job/role and why?
The roles I have found most fulfilling are those that have allowed me to combine client leadership, strategic problem-solving and people development. I’ve always been most energised when working at the point where client needs, team leadership and business improvement come together. Those roles are particularly meaningful because they create the opportunity not only to deliver results, but also to build trust, strengthen teams and leave things better than you found them.
Do you have a favourite motto or quote that guides your professional life?
A phrase that has always stayed with me is: “Lift as you climb.” For me, it reflects the kind of leadership that matters most — achieving your own goals while also helping others to grow, succeed and see what is possible for themselves. I believe leadership is at its most powerful when it creates opportunity, builds confidence and brings others forward with you.
