MY CAREER IN SIX SPOTLIGHT
REBECCA PAINE

Sharing her career journey by answering the six questions below.
Who or what has been your biggest source of inspiration throughout your career?
A previous Manager at National Australia Bank (NAB) London often comes to mind. He sadly passed away 6 years ago and I often think about how he believed in me to go further in my career. He was quite a character! I loved how authentic he was in the workplace. He often spoke his mind about things that could be improved and was never shy about asking questions or admitting when he didn’t know things. I believe I’m true to myself and transparent with others at work. I share my honest opinions and my vulnerabilities and want to show my team it’s okay to speak up when something doesn’t feel right or they need support.
Would you say your success is primarily due to luck or hard work?
Hard work! And it’s not just about spending hours producing tangible outputs; it’s important to build connections with colleagues and sponsors. They have helped me with overcoming many challenges and provided support to move into new roles.
What is the driving force behind your career aspirations?
My love of learning and connecting with people. I like to explore different perspectives, stay up to date on latest trends and be able to come up with fresh ideas.
If given the chance to do one thing differently in your career, what would it be and why?
I would have spent more time with colleagues outside of my immediate teams; it is a great way to learn about different roles that could be of interest.
What was your most favourite job/role and why?
It was my Financial Institutions Transaction Banking Sales role in London. I loved learning about the inner workings of banks and payments. It was also incredible to have clients based in many different countries and I had to the opportunity to travel throughout Europe for work!
Do you have a favourite motto or quote that guides your professional life?
“A small act is worth a million thoughts.” I use this to remind myself that to be the best leader for my team or trusted adviser for clients, having good intentions isn’t enough —I need to demonstrate and take action.
