MY CAREER IN SIX SPOTLIGHT

  MICHELLE BUTLER

 Vice President, Lending Solutions

Tangerine

Sharing her career journey by answering the six questions below.

Who or what has been your biggest source of inspiration throughout your career?

I draw inspiration from two main sources. First and foremost, my parents. Growing up, they instilled in me the values of hard work and humility. I watched my father advance in his career and my mother re-enter the workforce after years of raising our family. They always emphasized that with perseverance, I could achieve what I set my mind to. They supported me through personal setbacks and reinforced the importance of stopping to celebrate the wins along the way. My colleagues have also been a significant source of inspiration throughout my career. There’s nothing like working alongside great leaders and team members, collaborating to make good things happen, and celebrating our successes together. Having a work culture that fosters inspiration, and celebration has been crucial for my long-term motivation and growth.

Would you say your success is primarily due to luck or hard work?

Reflecting on this question, I realize that both factors have played a significant role. I am incredibly fortunate that my parents provided me with the opportunities and foundation to embark on my career journey. However, I have also invested a great deal of time, effort, and resilience throughout my career. I have consistently pushed myself to take on challenges and embrace risks. There have definitely been moments when I felt overwhelmed, but hard work has enabled me to navigate through them. I am grateful to have had exceptional leaders and colleagues who have supported me during those times of uncertainty and helped me maintain my confidence.

What is the driving force behind your career aspirations?

Conquering challenges (pushing myself), making an impact and finding opportunities to learn something new.

If given the chance to do one thing differently in your career, what would it be and why?

I wish I had sought an opportunity to work outside of Toronto, or even Canada. I admire those who have taken on global roles and experienced living in different parts of the world. Exposure to diverse cultures firsthand broadens one’s perspective and can provide new career opportunities. Plus, what a fantastic way to explore a new part of the world!

What was your most favourite job/role and why?

I have two roles that I look back on often. I grew my brand marketing skills at Visa and had a lot of fun doing it; shooting TV advertisements around the world, collaborating with global teams and experiencing a couple of the Olympic Games. From a career growth perspective, my time at GE stands out. I had the privilege of working with inspirational leaders in a culture focused on talent. I also got to experience a 3-week Leadership retreat at the iconic Crotonville, GE’s dedicated Learning Centre. My leader constantly provided new growth opportunities, which significantly contributed to my development.

Do you have a favourite motto or quote that guides your professional life?

“Be Resilient.” It is all about bouncing back and continuing to push forward, no matter the obstacles. It is not a fancy motto, but a reminder to find the strength to work through setbacks.
