Who or what has been your biggest source of inspiration throughout your career?
I’ve always been inspired by my dad (who passed away a few years ago). From humble beginnings, he created his own luck through hard work, great people skills and a positive attitude. He had great foresight to steer me towards a career in technology (in the early days of the internet). He read widely, spoke multiple languages and our family travelled extensively, which taught me to be curious, open to new experiences and perspectives.
Would you say your success is primarily due to luck or hard work?
A combination of the two ingredients! I’ve been lucky to have great managers who took a chance on me and hard work has helped me deliver results and progress my career. Taking advantage of opportunities presented, preparation and going the extra mile, have been the key to success.
What is the driving force behind your career aspirations?
Several years into my career in payments, I realised that having purpose made my work more rewarding. Through my work in digital payments and security, it’s been rewarding to help businesses grow and transact securely or deliver convenience, choice and peace of mind to consumers. Using technology to innovate with intent and make a meaningful impact, energises me and is the driving force behind my career aspirations.
If given the chance to do one thing differently in your career, what would it be and why?
The wins as well as the setbacks I faced during my career, taught me important lessons and shaped who I am today. With experience, I learnt not to dwell on my mistakes and instead use the learnings to become more resilient, adaptable and open to new experiences.
What was your most favourite job/role and why?
My current role and company top the list – when I took on this role, I was out of my comfort zone, had a steep learning curve and no team. My manager trusted that I could learn about the business, develop a plan for growth, build a team from scratch and deliver innovative solutions that made a difference and solved real world problems. I’ve had an incredible opportunity to grow professionally, hone my leadership skills, learn to fail fast and adapt to change.
Do you have a favourite motto or quote that guides your professional life?
I’d like to share two quotes: The first is from Richard Branson, “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later.” Reflecting on my career, I learnt the most when I took a considered risk or took on a new challenge, got out of my comfort zone and backed myself to succeed.
I love Jacinta Ardern’s quote, “I refuse to believe that you cannot be both compassionate and strong. It takes courage and strength to be empathetic.”
Leadership is about empathy and bringing out the best in teams through mutual respect, trust and authenticity. Good results will follow, if the team is built on a strong foundation and has a great culture.
