MY CAREER IN SIX SPOTLIGHT

ALIA GRABOW

VP – Risk Manager (Conduct, Incentive Compensation, Fraud, and Complaints)

 U.S. Bank/Elavon

Sharing her career journey by answering the six questions below.

Who or what has been your biggest source of inspiration throughout your career?

Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to encounter several inspiring individuals, but the most consistent source of inspiration has been the strong female leaders I’ve had the privilege to observe and work alongside within the bank. Seeing their leadership in action—often in challenging and complex environments—has deeply influenced my own approach to work and leadership.

I’ve found that I connect most naturally with women in the workplace. Their resilience, perspective, and ability to lead with both strength and authenticity have made a lasting impact on me and shape how I show up and contribute every day.

Would you say your success is primarily due to luck or hard work?

This is a tough question for me, as I naturally tend to downplay my achievements and often attribute my success to being in the right place at the right time. But when I really reflect on it, I see that it’s less about luck and more about my ability to adapt to change, stay flexible in the face of challenges, and remain open to new opportunities—even when they come unexpectedly.

What is the driving force behind your career aspirations?

While I haven’t always defined long-term career aspirations in a traditional sense, the driving force behind my career has consistently been a desire for personal growth. I’m motivated by the opportunity to stretch myself, learn something new, and contribute in ways that evolve over time.

If given the chance to do one thing differently in your career, what would it be and why?

There isn’t a major decision or moment I would change, as each experience has shaped who I am and helped me grow. That said, if I could do one thing differently, it would be learning earlier in my career to advocate for myself more confidently.

What was your most favourite job/role and why?

One of my favourite roles was serving as a Sales Support Manager. The role required extensive travel, which allowed me to see different parts of the country and build relationships with people across the organization. It was a tremendous opportunity for professional growth, but it also gave me a deeper personal appreciation for the things I already valued in my life—from the place I call home to my relationships with my husband, friends, and family.

Do you have a favourite motto or quote that guides your professional life?

One of my favorite mottos is Arthur Ashe’s: “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” I tend to be an overthinker and a bit of a perfectionist, so this reminds me to focus on what’s in my control instead of getting stuck waiting for perfect conditions. It helps me take action, stay grounded, and make progress when things aren’t ideal.
